Male Bust

Inv. Scu 2024

The man’s torso is turned slightly to the left. The details of his hair and beard have been lightly incised into the marble. While little time was taken with his hair, the rest of his features were sculpted with great detail.

The man has almond shaped eyes and his eyebrows are knit together, giving him an expression of intensity. We can tell that the man is an important military figure due to his clothes: the sculptor has dressed him in a breastplate (armor) and a paludmentum, a cloak worn by military commanders that fastens at one shoulder.

The head is made from luna marble, the bust from alabaster.

This work depicts a young man from the third century A.D. We do not know his identity, largely because the provenance of the work is unknown (probably Rome).
