Head of a man

Inv. Scu 1135

The herma depicts a young man with idealized facial features.

The hair follows the shape of the skullcap around the oval face and is formed by small tidy locks on the forehead. The eyes are large and expressionless, and the lips fleshy.
Note the detail of the sideburns barely hinted at on the cheeks

The lack of physiognomic characterization has led to the interpretation of the work as an idealized portrait of an athlete.

The shape of the eyes and eyelids have comparisons with 4th century BC sculptures, even if the detail of the sideburns suggest a date after Alexander the Great .

The work was found near the Auditorium of Maecenas
