Dog in “verde ranocchia” marble

Inv. Scu 1110

The statue depicts a hunting dog, from the bloodhound breed. It most likely decorated the entrance of one of the garden pavilions. It is resting on its rear legs while its forelegs are extended. Its head is erect and looks towards the right. Its abdominal bones and taut chest muscles are quite visible. The ears are missing. The plinth is also ancient and made from the same marble.

The statue is made from a very rare variegated marble coming from Egypt, called “verde ranocchia”.

The work, with its exceptional craftsmanship, is evidence of Maecenas’ collecting taste; he loved to surround himself with ancient and exotic masterpieces.

The sculpture was found near the Auditorium of Maecenas. .
