Fountain shaped as a rhyton

Inv. Scu 1101

The beautiful fountain in the form of a horned-shaped drinking cup (rhyton) stands out among the works that decorated the gardens of Maecenas.

The work shows a remarkable artistic level and represents an outstanding example of the Neo-Attic style, in fashion during the Augustan period.

It was probably made by one of the many Greek workshops existing in Rome in this period, which made great masterpeieces inspired by and imitating the classic tradition.

Signed by the Greek artist Pontios, it was found on May 15, 1875 in the Auditorium di Mecenate .
