Funerary stele of a young girl with dove

Inv. Scu 987

Funerary stele of a young girl with dove. The funerary stele depicts the side view of a young girl with dove in her right hand.

The facial features are archaic, as is the rendering of the clothing, formed by a long robe (chiton) with rigid vertical pleats and a cloak (himation), of which the young girl is delicately holding an edge. Perhaps the work was created in Magna Graecia.

The stele, datable to the late archaic period, was found on the Esquiline Hill, near the Villa Palombara, built in the area occupied in the Imperial period by the Lamian Gardens.
