Fragment of an original Greek funerary stele

Inv. Scu 984

Only the central part of the stele remains: in the foreground, a female figure wears a long tunic (chiton) and cloak (himation) and sits on a stool . In front of her, there is a young girl standing with an open jewel case in her hands.

The pentelic marble stele is decorated with a representation that belongs to a type very common in Greece starting from the end of the 5th century BC (400-390 BC) .

The fragment was found on the Esquiline Hill, near Villa Palombara, built in the area occupied in the Imperial period by the Lamian Gardens.
