Portrait of Marcus Aurelius

Inv. Scu 650

Portrait of Marcus Aurelius of the so-called “Third Type”: recognizable from the peculiar style of the curls on the forehead.

The head is currently mounted on an earlier statue wearing a lorica, dating to the early Imperial period and decorated with a motif of winged Victories setting up a trophy.

The work dates to the mid-Antonine period.

The portrait, which shows the Emperor’s face bloodless and inanimate (thick upper eyelid, arched eyebrows), was created in the years between 160 and 161 AD.

The work was probably found in Rome.
