Inv. Scu 635
This statue represents a gowned figure, likely a Roman magistrate. A basket for storing scrolls stands next to his left leg – this object is functional as well as decorative and acts as the support for the statue, helping to keep it upright.
He is dressed in a tunic and short toga which disguise much of his figure in a mass of drapery. Only his right and left hands emerge from the fabric, the right held over his chest and the left resting by his side at the level of his hips.
On his feet he wears a pair of high woven sandals (calcei patricii), a type of shoe generally worn only by Roman senators.
The work dates to the late Imperial period (250-300 d.C.) and it was probably found in Rome.
The portrait-head of the piece is modern and therefore not relevant to the sculpture.
