Statue of an Athlete

Inv. Scu 633

The statue represents a young athlete standing still. His left leg is moved forward and bent and his head is turned torwards his right shoulder; the short, curly hair shows a greater detail on the back of the head than on the front.

Traces of a prop indicate that the right arm, currently product of restoration, was originally bent and lowered like the left one.

The young man is represented completely naked with his head slightly bent towards the right; his hands once held some attributes (a strigil?) now lost.

The Albani inventory descibes the statue as Antinous; identification no longer valid.

The statue, located in the Salone since its acquisition, is an Imperial copy of a likely bronze original of the end of the 4th century BC.

The work was probably found in Rome.
