The portrait belongs to a middle-aged man; the head, looking straight forward, is set on a modern bust cut off at the chest.
As suggested by the thick fringe on the forehead and the slanting eyes, the portrait intentionally adheres to the official image of Trajan and can be dated to the early 2nd century AD.
Originally the head may have had a funerary destination.
Formerly in the collection of cardinal Alessandro Albani, the head was acquired for the Capitoline Museums in 1733.
