Portrait of Antinous

Inv. Scu 294

Portait of Antinous cut slightly under the joint of the neck, probably belonging to a full figure statue. This is the main type of portrait with the laurel wreath.

The face, turned to the left, is characterized by the elongated cut eyes, with carved pupil, the expressive strenghth of which is emphasized by the strong and asymmetrical eyebrows.

The lips are full and tightly closed. The mop of hair, with a lively and plastic volume, is arranged in a series of wavy locks overlapping on multiple planes: a small laurel wreath is worn on the head.

The work dates to the late Hadrianic period, right after the death of Antinous in AD 130.

It was probably found in Rome
