Bearded herma

Inv. Scu 7

Herma of a bearded deity with hair parted on the forehead and held up by a thin band; wavy locks fall down on the shoulders.

The herma is a companion to a similar exemplar also displayed in the Courtyard of Palazzo Nuovo; the two sculptures share a number of features and may have been produced by the same workshop. It is likely that in ancient times they had been displayed as a pair.

The Capitoline herma can be dated to the early 2nd century AD.

The work was probably found in Rome.
