This small devotional work had previously been attributed, without a real basis, to Carlo Cignani.

The iconography of the Virgo Lactans (Madonna feeding the Child) goes back to early Christian art: particularly widespread during the Middle Ages and early Reinassance, it was afterwards seldom represented.
