The picture belongs to the early work of the Venetian artist. Here, Domenico Tintoretto revisits the theme of the Baptism, painted in 1579-81 by his father Jacopo for the Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice.
The scene concentrates on the group formed by Christ and the Baptist. The figures in the background of mothers and sons are barely sketched.
This does not recall the Gospel depiction (the baptism of St. John was for an adult), but subsequent baptismal tradition.
