Male portrait

Inv. Scu 340

This portrait depicts a young man whose elongated face shows harmonious features and a smooth complexion. The slanting eyes have iris and pupil incised; the eyebrows are indicated. Quite naturalistic is the rendering of the snub nose and full lips.

The hair is combed in smooth locks on the high forehead, with curls twisted leftward. A short beard follows the contour of the chin, with small and thickly carved locks. A cross is carved on the forehead.

The head dates to the age of the emperor Gallienus.
